The United State Agency International Development-Integrated Health Program (USAID-IHP) on Wednesday, donated 16,000 mama-kits worth N84 million to Sokoto state primary healthcare centres.
The state director of IHP, Dr. Usman Al-Rashid who spoke at the symbolic handing over event, which took place at Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital Sokoto, said the gesture is a measure to reduce maternal mortality in the state.
Represented by the IHP’s state technical director, Dr. Fatima Muhammed at the handing over of the items to the ministry of health, Al-Rashid also said that the programme was renovating 40 primary healthcare centres across the state.
According to him, 16,650 mama-kits which consists of all the needed delivery kits for expectant mothers at the rate of N28 million.
Ar-rashid further disclosed that another sum of N66 million will be expended on the USAID-IHP donates 16,650 mama-kits to Sokoto PHCs rehabilitation of 40 primary health care centers this year.
“We are also working on another 40 primary healthcare centres against next year which will make it a total number of 80 health centers out of the 244 in the state.
“We are doing this to encourage our women to visit health facilities for their delivery which is more saver for them than delivery at home.”
Speaking in her remarks, the state commissioner for women and children affairs, Kulu Sifawa, commend IHP for the gesture in the state health sector. She said the materials will not only be useful for women in labour to reduce maternal mortality but also for the state health workers.
