The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) in Edo State has announced significant milestones in healthcare delivery for 2024, including treating nearly 300,000 patients and performing over 40,000 surgeries.
Chief Medical Director, Prof. Darlington Obaseki, revealed these achievements during the hospital’s annual Christmas Concert and Award Night, organized to celebrate staff dedication and thank God for the year’s successes.
“We have treated nearly 300,000 patients and performed over 40,000 surgeries this year, a feat that underscores the depth of our commitment to the health and well-being of Nigerians,” Prof. Obaseki stated.
Reflecting on his seven-year tenure as CMD, he highlighted the hospital’s transformation into a healthcare institution renowned for excellence. Prof. Obaseki noted that the challenges of 2024, particularly the impact of economic reforms, tested the resilience of the staff but did not compromise service delivery.
“Despite the hurdles, UBTH maintained a high level of service delivery, ensuring patients had uninterrupted access to essential resources like syringes, drugs, and water,” he said.
He praised the hospital’s staff for their unwavering dedication, emphasizing their contributions to achieving UBTH’s goals. “From nurses to pharmacists, doctors to medical lab scientists, and interns, every team member has played an integral role in our success this year,” Prof. Obaseki added.
The CMD also reaffirmed his vision to make UBTH a symbol of professionalism and care, stating: “We wanted a UBTH where the market vendor would proudly offer rebates to staff simply because of the hospital’s reputation.”
