ASHENEWS reports that one month after its report on the forgotten health center in Damba community in Zamfara state, the health center is currently under renovation.

The Damba Primary Health Center, located in Damba community of Gusau local government area of Zamfara State, is now undergoing total renovation, following a report by ASHENEWS and Ripple Newspaper that highlighted how the health center had been abandoned and left to decay for many years.

A health worker at the PHC, Dr Rabi’u Damɓa confirmed the development to our reporter in a telephone conversation on Monday, January 27, 2025.

According to the health worker, the hospital’s roof, including a large dilapidated hall and several smaller rooms, has been removed as part of the ongoing renovation.

He further explained that the doors and windows are also being replaced, and that a new building block is under construction at the facility.

Although he did not confirm whether the project is being funded by the state or federal government, he stated that the renovation is likely being financed by the federal government.

Published on January 3, 2025, the report highlighted the deteriorating condition of the health center, which had raised serious concerns within the Damɓa community.

The facility had been neglected for approximately five years, leaving residents struggling with health crises.

The Damɓa Primary Health Center was relocated to its current site in 2020, after the Matawalle-led administration allocated N48.96 million for the conversion of the center into a COVID-19 treatment facility.

While the PHC is currently being renovated at its present location, the COVID-19 center remains closed.
