Mr Bashir Onifade, Chairman of the Institute for Dietetics, Kwara State Chapter, has said that nutrients play a crucial role in strengthening the immune system, helping the body prevent, fight, and recover from communicable diseases.
Onifade stated this on Thursday in Ilorin while speaking on the sidelines of the commemoration of World Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day.
He explained that this year’s theme is “Discover the Power of Nutrition,” which emphasizes the importance of nutrients in restoring immune function and reducing disease severity.
According to him, nutritious foods can reverse deficiencies that make individuals more susceptible to infections.
Onifade, who is also the Head of Department (HOD) of Nutrition and Dietetics at the Kwara State University Teaching Hospital (KWASUTH), said the day is set aside to appreciate the roles of registered dietitians and nutritionists globally in preventing diseases and promoting optimal health.
“Dietitians and nutritionists educate people on how to make healthy choices through better nutrition,” he said.
“Diet is important for good health. When you consume wrong foods like junk foods, you become prone to communicable diseases,” he warned.
He added that a balanced diet provides numerous benefits, including boosting energy levels, supporting overall health, strengthening the immune system, and reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers.
Furthermore, the nutrition expert disclosed that the number of malnourished children in Kwara State has reduced due to the state government’s efforts in administering micronutrient powder as a complementary meal to children.
He urged Nigerians to seek guidance from professionals who can advise them on the right foods for good health.
Also speaking, Dr Bankole Olugbenga, the State Nutrition Officer, emphasized the importance of nutrients to the body.
He explained that food is not just fuel for the body, but that good nutrition prevents both communicable and non-communicable diseases.
Olugbenga called for greater synergy and cooperation among members of the association to achieve common goals.
Highlights of the programme included a courtesy visit to the Kwara State Primary Healthcare Development Agency and the donation of foods and commodities to the Waafah Children’s Home.
