The Niger State Contributory Health Agency (NICARE) has intensified its awareness campaign on its health insurance scheme to make healthcare more affordable and accessible to millions of residents, particularly those in rural and low-income communities.
The awareness campaign took place with staff of NICARE moving from their office at the old Secretariat complex to the Minna Central Market and around central areas in Minna creating awareness.
The scheme aims to provide an affordable healthcare service to citizens of the state especially this at the grassroots.
Speaking during the campaign, Sulayman Abubakar, the NICARE Managing Director, described the initiative as a major step toward achieving universal health coverage in the state. “This scheme is a bold step toward universal health coverage in Niger State,” he said, stressing that the program will guarantee citizens access to quality healthcare services without the fear of financial hardship.
Abubakar noted that with healthcare costs continuing to rise, the insurance package will serve as a vital safety net for families and individuals. “Our goal is to ensure that no citizen is denied medical care because of cost,” he added.
Public health experts have applauded the move, describing it as a potential game-changer for the healthcare sector, underscoring the importance of strict monitoring and transparency.
Some community members also expressed hope that the scheme will reach underserved areas saying for people in rural areas, this could be the first real chance to access affordable healthcare.
