The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has urged Nigerians to prioritise health and safety during the festive season to prevent disease outbreaks linked to gatherings and increased travel.
In an interview on Saturday in Abuja, Dr Jide Idris, Director-General (D-G) of the NCDC, emphasised the importance of preventive measures during the festive season.
He specifically highlighted the need for proper hygiene, staying home when unwell, and ensuring food safety to protect public health and prevent disease outbreaks.
“As we celebrate this festive season, let us prioritise our health and safety. Remember to wash your hands regularly, stay home if you’re feeling unwell, and spread joy, not germs,” Idris said.
He noted the increased risks of disease transmission during the holiday season, citing previous trends where communicable diseases like respiratory infections, foodborne illnesses, and cholera surged.
“For instance, the 2022 holiday season saw a 20 per cent rise in flu cases nationwide and foodborne illnesses in several states due to improper food handling.”
Idris particularly warned against poor food hygiene during festive gatherings.
“It is critical to ensure proper food preparation and storage to prevent outbreaks,” he said.
“To protect yourself and your loved ones, the NCDC advises ensuring proper ventilation in crowded spaces to reduce the spread of airborne diseases.
“Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly, cook food properly, and avoid storing cooked meals at unsafe temperatures.
“Get vaccinated, especially for flu, to reduce risks, particularly for children, the elderly, and those with underlying conditions.
“The NCDC is collaborating with state governments and other stakeholders to monitor disease trends and respond promptly to any outbreaks.
“Emergency response hotlines remain active nationwide, and disease surveillance teams are on alert.”
Idris encouraged citizens to visit the NCDC website (www.ncdc.gov.ng) for guidelines on staying healthy during the holidays and to call the toll-free line (6232) for assistance or to report cases to the State Ministry of Health.
“The gift of good health is the best present we can share this season. Let’s work together to protect the health of all Nigerians,” the D-G said.
