The Forward Operating Base (FOB) of the Nigerian Navy in Badagry, Lagos, on Wednesday extended medical services to 769 residents of Iworo and Epeme communities.
The exercise recorded an impressive turnout, with hundreds of community members receiving free medical consultations, medications, and essential health sensitization. A substantial volume of drugs and medical supplies was dispensed, reflecting the Navy’s commitment to enhancing community health and welfare.
Speaking at the start of the programme, Navy Capt. Leye Omotayo, Commanding Officer of FOB Badagry, said the medical outreach was not only a gesture of goodwill but also a lifesaving intervention for residents of Iworo Kingdom.
Omotayo noted that the initiative aligned with the Nigerian Navy’s Civil-Military Cooperation objectives.
“This is in strict compliance with the strategic directives of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral A. Abbas, aimed at strengthening trust, partnership, and security within host communities,” he said.
He explained that the outreach was particularly targeted at the elderly and vulnerable residents who might face challenges in accessing quality healthcare.
“The initiative underscores the Nigerian Navy’s dedication to addressing pressing health issues and enhancing the quality of life in its host communities,” he added.
Omotayo said the exercise had medical personnel and sufficient medications to attend to between 600 and 1,000 residents.
“We have four medical doctors and other supporting personnel to attend to the residents. We also have pharmacists and medications ready; once prescriptions are made, residents can immediately receive their treatment,” he said, urging residents to take advantage of the services, describing the exercise as a “hospital brought to the doorstep of the community.”
Also speaking, Dr. Nimotallah Olajire, Medical Director of FOB Badagry, said the outreach included medical consultations, health education, malaria tests, blood pressure and sugar checks, and deworming exercises. He urged residents to pay attention to their health.
In his remarks, Oba Oladele Kosoko, the Oniworo of Iworo Kingdom, commended Omotayo for his leadership and commitment to the wellbeing of the local populace. He expressed profound gratitude on behalf of the community and local council to the Commanding Officer, the officers and men of FOB Badagry, and the Nigerian Navy at large.
Mrs. Afusat Liadi, a resident and beneficiary of the medical outreach, said she was treated for malaria and received different medications. She thanked the Navy for bringing the free medical services to the community and urged that the exercise be extended regularly.
