The Ondo State House of Assembly has called on the state government to guarantee public access to the Lassa Fever Reference Hospital in Akure, to ensure timely and adequate treatment of the disease.
Speaker of the Assembly, Olamide Oladiji, made the appeal on Thursday during plenary in Akure while presenting a matter of urgent public importance.
Oladiji stressed the need for collective action to address the continued threat of Lassa fever in the state. He urged the state government to upgrade the Akure reference hospital with modern medical equipment to enhance its capacity to handle cases.
He also advised health workers to maintain strict personal hygiene and preventive measures to protect themselves and the public.
“The Ministry of Health must intensify awareness campaigns to educate people on the importance of prevention over cure,” he said.
The speaker further charged lawmakers to support state-led efforts by ensuring continuous public sensitisation on the risks and prevention of Lassa fever.
Contributing to the discussion, Dr. Chris Ogunlana, representing Irele Constituency (APC), commended the Assembly for addressing the issue, describing it as a “life-saving deliberation.”
“The most basic measure is environmental cleanliness. We must block every entry point for rodents into our homes and prevent contamination of food,” Ogunlana said.
Similarly, Mr. Oluwarotimi Abitogun (Akure South 2, APC) noted that many residents had been affected by the disease and warned against self-medication, which he said was worsening the situation.
Meanwhile, the House acknowledged the receipt of four new commissioner-nominees from the governor, in addition to the 12 already screened.
Speaker Oladiji directed the nominees to appear before the Assembly on Friday with valid credentials and updated curriculum vitae for vetting, in line with Section 192 (1 & 3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
In another legislative development, Oladiji announced the constitution of all standing committees to facilitate smooth and effective legislative operations.
Additionally, a bill to establish the Ondo State Coastal Management Agency passed its first reading.
