Kaduna State’s health sector has witnessed remarkable advancements under the leadership of Governor Uba Sani, who assumed office on May 29, 2023. In line with his administration’s “SUSTAIN” manifesto, the governor has spearheaded efforts to revolutionize healthcare delivery across the state, focusing on improving infrastructure, service delivery, human resources, and sustainable financing.
Addressing press members in a recent briefing, Kaduna State Commissioner for Health, Umma Ahmed, highlighted the administration’s commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and promoting healthy lives for all state residents. With an N71.65 billion allocation to the health sector in the 2024 budget, Kaduna State is poised to realize significant improvements in health outcomes.
Key Achievements in the Health Sector:
- Infrastructure Development:
The state is on track to complete the 300-bed specialist hospital at Millennium City by the end of 2024, a facility equipped with advanced medical technologies, including an oncology unit for cancer treatment. Additionally, nine secondary hospitals across the three senatorial districts are being upgraded, along with 30 high-volume healthcare centers, to provide modern healthcare services to all residents. - Enhancing Service Delivery:
Governor Sani’s administration has distributed N3 billion worth of modern medical equipment to 290 Primary Health Centers (PHCs) and implemented robust interventions in nutrition to combat malnutrition among children. Over 4.65 million doses of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) have been distributed to address severe acute malnutrition. - Capacity Building:
More than 2,000 healthcare workers have been trained in specialized areas, while 1,354 Community Health Influencers, Promoters, and Service Providers (CHIPS) have been deployed in 14 Local Government Areas to extend healthcare access to underserved regions. - Pharmaceutical Improvements:
The state renewed its Memorandum of Understanding with the Pharmaceutical Group of Manufacturing Association of Nigeria, ensuring a steady supply of quality medicines. The upgrade of the State Medical Stores to Pharmagrade standards further enhances the quality and availability of medicines. - Medical Oxygen and Neonatal Care:
Through collaborations with UNICEF, the state has established additional oxygen plants and a neonatal center to address infant mortality, particularly in underserved areas. - Digital Health Initiatives:
Governor Sani’s administration has digitized 95% of the State Primary Healthcare Board staff data and is piloting Electronic Medical Records (EMR) in nine secondary health facilities. - Public-Private Partnerships:
The administration has formed partnerships with international organizations, including UNICEF, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and The Global Fund, to improve healthcare services and outcomes.
The commissioner praised the governor’s vision and dedication, reiterating that these reforms have significantly improved the health status of the people of Kaduna State. With plans for further progress in 2024-2027, the administration remains committed to making healthcare accessible and of high quality for all citizens.
