The Sokoto state government has confirmed the outbreak of meningitis in some local government areas of the state.

The state Commissioner of Health, Dr. Faruk Wurno, confirmed this in a statement issued by the Ministry’s Information and Punlic Relations Officer, Nura Bello.

The commissioner noted that the state was heightening vigilance after laboratory confirmations of multiple measles cases added that the government  is intensifying surveillance, case management, and public health interventions to contain the outbreak.

He urged the people to always take precautionary measures against the deadly disease.

“These include seeking immediate medical attention at the nearest Health facility upon experiencing symptoms such as fever, severe headache, neck stiffness or any unusual symptoms.

“The Commissioner advised people to ensure good personal and environmental hygiene as well as avoiding over crowded places and ensure proper ventilation in homes and public spaces,” the statement said.

The statement further called on people to report suspected cases of diseases or any unusual illness to the nearest hospital.

According to him, Governor Ahmed Aliyu has already provided all the necessary medicament to health facilities across the state.
