The Kaduna State Ministry of Health has confirmed an outbreak of diarrhea at the Government Girls Senior and Junior Secondary School in Kawo, affecting 81 students. Fifteen of the students were hospitalised during the incident.
The outbreak was investigated by the Kaduna State Rapid Response Team, led by the State Epidemiologist, Dr. Jeremiah Diako. He reported that the affected students were between the ages of 16 and 17 and were promptly transferred to the General Hospital in Kawo for treatment. All hospitalised students have since been discharged.
In response to the incident, the Ministry of Health has recommended a series of preventive measures aimed at avoiding similar outbreaks in the future.
These include improvements in disease reporting systems, the establishment of school-based surveillance, standardisation of case referral procedures, and enhanced training on food safety and waste management. The ministry also called for strengthened local preparedness to respond more effectively to health emergencies.
Authorities emphasised the urgency of implementing these measures to protect student health and prevent future outbreaks.
