The Deputy Director of Medical Services and Training at the Kwara Ministry of Health, Dr Stephen Arigidi has emphasised the importance of early detection and lifestyle modifications to prevent prostate enlargement.
He made this call while speaking as a guest at the National Association of Veteran Journalists (NALVEJ) meeting in Ilorin on Wednesday.
Arigidi said men above 40, especially those with a family history of prostate enlargement, should regularly undergo the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test.
He also stressed the need for lifestyle adjustments to reduce the risk of prostate enlargement.
Arigidi recommended increasing fruit and vegetable intake, engaging in routine exercise, and undergoing regular screenings, especially for those with a family history.
Additionally, he advised avoiding red meat, alcohol, and smoking, as well as maintaining a healthy weight.
The medical expert noted that prostate enlargement was common among men above 40, particularly those with a family history of the disease, affecting one in five men.
He emphasised that early detection and proper management could prevent the condition from becoming malignant.
