A medical doctor, Dr. Sylvester Ikhisemojie, has explained that earwax is normal, but when it builds up too much, it can cause health problems if not treated.
He said earwax, also called cerumen, protects the ear. However, when it becomes too much or hardens, it can block hearing and cause discomfort.
“This does not mean earwax is always a problem. But sometimes, when it builds up, it becomes a serious issue that must be treated properly,” Dr. Ikhisemojie noted.
He explained that too much of it can block sound waves, causing temporary hearing loss or muffled hearing.
The doctor added that excessive wax can also bring other symptoms. These include itching, discomfort, or a heavy feeling in the ear.
If the buildup gets worse, it can cause ear pain. Some people may also hear ringing or buzzing sounds (tinnitus). In severe cases, it can increase the risk of ear infections like otitis externa.
Despite this, Dr. Ikhisemojie stressed that not all cases of earwax need treatment.
“Usually, earwax does not need to be removed unless it causes problems,” he said.
He warned against trying to remove earwax at home without proper care, saying it can make the condition worse.
According to him, some cases need medical attention, and it is better to see a doctor instead of using unsafe home remedies.
“A healthcare professional, usually an ENT doctor, can flush the ear canal to remove the wax. This is a simple procedure done in a clinic without the need for anesthesia,” he advised.
Cleveland Clinic, an online health portal, also warned that untreated earwax can cause hearing loss, ear pain, dizziness, irritation, and ringing in the ears.
It noted that earwax blockage is usually not dangerous, and symptoms go away after proper treatment.
