A medical practitioner, Dr Bala Chigero, has advised people of all ages to engage in regular physical activity, describing exercise as essential for maintaining the proper functioning of the body’s systems.
Chigero made this known on Tuesday during an interview with reporters in Bauchi, noting that regular exercise helps regulate heart function, improves breathing, strengthens muscles, maintains muscle tone and supports the healthy functioning of vital organs.
He said people living with diabetes should be particularly committed to routine physical activity, as exercise improves insulin utilization, helps regulate blood sugar levels and reduces the risk of long-term complications.
The medical expert described exercise as a form of medicine, noting that it has become increasingly important due to sedentary lifestyles and the growing dependence on motorized transportation, which have significantly reduced daily physical movement.
Comparing past and present lifestyles, Chigero observed that older generations were generally more physically active through walking and manual labour, a trend he said contributed to better physical fitness, greater endurance and longer life expectancy.
He expressed concern that many children and young people now engage in little or no physical activity, as they are often driven everywhere, leading to poor physical development and increased health risks.
Chigero also warned that unhealthy eating habits among children frequently result in obesity and related health complications, stressing that balanced nutrition combined with regular exercise is critical for healthy growth and disease prevention.
He cited World Health Organization guidelines recommending at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity weekly, which can be achieved through activities such as brisk walking. He advised beginners to start gradually and, where necessary, exercise under supervision to avoid health complications.
