The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, has announced that Nigeria is set to begin local production of insulin, reducing dependence on imported supplies.
He revealed this during the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) on sustainable insulin production between the Ministry’s agency, the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NABRDA), and Shanghai Haiqi Industrial Company Limited of China in Abuja.
The minister noted that for decades, millions of Nigerians living with diabetes have relied on imported insulin, which is often expensive and scarce. With this new partnership, diabetic patients will soon have access to affordable, locally produced insulin.
Nnaji explained that producing insulin in Nigeria would not only solve a major health challenge but also create jobs, strengthen technical skills, and establish Nigeria as a regional hub for medical biotechnology. He added that this step aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.
He praised the agreement as a move from research to practical production, describing it as a demonstration of strong cooperation between Nigeria and China, and a clear example of how science and international partnerships can improve lives.
The Director General of NABRDA, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, said the initiative is designed to turn research into practical solutions that meet Nigeria’s needs.
He added that working with the Chinese firm highlights Nigeria’s growing ability to participate in advanced biotechnology projects, especially in healthcare.
Also speaking, the General Manager of Shanghai Haiqi Industrial Company, Bokai Shai, said the collaboration will boost insulin production in Nigeria and contribute to the growth of the country’s pharmaceutical industry.
