Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, ATBUTH Bauchi has recorded a feat in the field of surgery with a successful first laser surgery on a patient with kidney stones.
The launch of the procedure yesterday at the hospital was done by a team of surgeons led by a Consultant Urologist at the Urology Centre Abuja, Dr. Evaritus Uzoma Azodoh.
The Consultant Urologist, Dr. Evaristus Azodoh said the patient had undergone what is called a laser lithotripsy procedure, which uses a high-power laser to break and extract the stone from the patient’s urethra.
“The laser surgery saves the patient from going through blade cuts and will save him or her the pains of staying on admission for days if not weeks before discharge and would take a longer period to heal.”
He noted that the machine can be used for general, gynaecology and Urology surgeries.
“I am delighted, the procedure which lasted 1 hour 30 minutes was successful.”
Chief Medical Director ATBUTH Bauchi, Dr Yusuf Jibrin said the hospital is proud that it can offer such services.
“Before now patients with such conditions like kidney stones and prostate had to travel far to seek treatment, but today it’s at their doorsteps.”
He appreciated the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi for supporting the procurement of the new high-power laser machine as well as other equipment for efficient and effective service delivery.
