The Association of Advocates Against Alcohol Harm in Nigeria (ASAAHN) has intensified its campaign for stronger measures to prevent the harmful effects of alcohol consumption, calling for the urgent prioritisation of harm prevention and public health advocacy.
The National Chairman of ASAAHN, Mr. Nwokocha Chijioke, disclosed this in an interview with reporters on Wednesday in Lagos.
He said the organisation is set to sensitise Nigerians on the dangers of alcohol consumption to mental health through a national conference scheduled for November 14.
The conference, themed “Strengthening Alcohol Policy Advocacy and Harm Prevention & Reduction for a Healthier Nigeria,” will also feature ASAAHN’s 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM).
Chijioke said the event aims to educate Nigerians on effective strategies for alcohol harm prevention and promote healthy living.
“We are at a critical point where public health advocacy must be strengthened through collaboration, research, and policy action,” he said.
“ASAAHN remains committed to mobilising stakeholders and citizens toward a healthier, safer society free from the dangers of alcohol harm.”
According to him, the conference will provide a platform to engage young people on moral values and positive lifestyle choices that can help shape their future.
He added that the one-day national event, which will hold in Ilupeju, Lagos State, will bring together leading voices in public health, policymakers, civil society organisations, researchers, and youth advocates from within and outside Nigeria.
“The conference will feature keynote presentations and plenary sessions by national and international experts,” Chijioke said.
“It will also include strategic dialogue sessions on alcohol policy implementation, harm reduction strategies, and networking opportunities for stakeholders driving Nigeria’s alcohol control and mental health agenda.”
Chijioke further called for support, partnerships, and active participation from individuals, institutions, and the private sector to ensure the success of the event.
