The Federal Capital Territory branch of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA-FCT) has urged the Federal Government to keep its promise to doctors by honoring the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in July.
The Chairman of NMA-FCT, Dr. Emeka Ayogu, made this appeal on Monday during a press conference held ahead of the association’s 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM).
The theme of the AGM is “Artificial Intelligence and its Revolution in Medicine: Friend or Foe?” with a sub-theme, “Healthcare Funding: Impact on the Nigerian Healthcare System.”
Dr. Ayogu stressed that the government’s commitment to the MoU is important because it would improve doctors’ welfare and reduce the mass migration of Nigerian doctors to developed countries in search of better working conditions.
He explained that NMA has always engaged the government in dialogue, pushing for better welfare and a healthier work environment for medical workers.
The NMA-FCT chairman also pointed out the association’s role in giving back to society. This includes supporting the families of colleagues who have passed away and organizing free medical outreach services for poor and underserved communities in the FCT.
On development projects, Ayogu reported that the association had made major progress on its 18-hectare Hippocratean Court Estate in Mamusa North.
According to him, completed works include perimeter fencing with capping, a gatehouse, and a security post. Surveys, demarcations, and allocation papers have also been issued to subscribers.
He appealed to the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) to help in constructing an access road to the estate. This, he explained, would allow members—who have already paid for the Certificate of Occupancy (C-of-O) and ground rent—to begin building on their plots.
Ayogu described these achievements as proof of the leadership’s commitment to growing and strengthening the association.
He also expressed gratitude to his executive team and various committees for their hard work and unity.
“As part of this AGM, we also held an interactive session between senior doctors and younger colleagues,” Ayogu said.
The session featured a panel discussion titled: “Financial Predicament of the Average Nigerian Medical Doctor: Any Way Out?”
