The Commissioner for Tertiary Education in Abia State, Professor Uche Uche, has advised leaders of higher institutions in the state to take early and effective steps to stop sexual harassment and other bad behaviors in their schools.
Speaking at a one-day meeting with heads of tertiary institutions, held at the Ministry’s office, Professor Uche said sexual harassment is a problem in society that affects people of all ages. He urged school leaders to make sure every student is safe and treated with respect.
The commissioner said sexual harassment is becoming more common in higher institutions across the country. He called for teamwork between the government and other important groups to fight it. He also asked parents to teach their children good behavior and keep an eye on their friends to help protect them from abuse.
During a talk titled “Model and Sexual Harassment Policy,” Mr. Emmanuel Olatunde from Gender Mobile Initiative explained that the meeting was held in partnership with the Ministry of Tertiary Education. He said it would help the government and schools create strong policies to keep students safe on campus. These plans would include rules, education, and the use of technology to prevent sexual harassment.
Dr. Ifenyinwa Obi from British University in Ukwa East and Rev. Father Jerome Onwughalu said the meeting was a good idea. They believe it will help bring order and improve behavior in higher institutions across the state.
The event was attended by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Chinyere Nwoko, as well as other education stakeholders and student union representatives from universities in Abia State.
