Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has submitted a supplementary budget of N61 billion to the Borno State House of Assembly to address the critical infrastructure needs following the recent flood disaster that ravaged the state.

The supplementary budget seeks to amend the previously signed N358.7 billion budget, increasing the total to N419.7 billion. Speaker Abdulkarim Lawan presented the governor’s request during a plenary session on Friday.

The September 10 floods severely impacted Maiduguri and surrounding communities, displacing about two million people, submerging vast areas, and destroying approximately 200,000 homes. Governor Zulum emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that critical infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and hospitals were significantly damaged, requiring immediate intervention.

Speaker Lawan highlighted that the additional funding would be allocated primarily for the reconstruction of key infrastructure. It would also support emergency relief efforts, humanitarian aid, assistance for farmers, and initiatives aimed at economic recovery and environmental management.

“The Borno State House of Assembly extends its sympathy to the victims of the floods and appreciates the efforts of individuals, local and international organizations, state governments, medical personnel, and security agencies for their role in alleviating the suffering of the affected population,” Lawan said.

Governor Zulum, who recently visited the flood-ravaged areas for an on-site assessment, stated that the scale of destruction demands swift action to restore normalcy and rebuild the affected communities.
