The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that 32 cows were killed by a thunderstorm during a downpour on Saturday.
This was disclosed by the Command’s spokesperson, Mrs Omolola Odutola, in a statement issued to newsmen on Sunday in Abeokuta.
According to Odutola, the incident occurred in the Osara community of Odeda Local Government Area.
She explained that on June 21, at about 4:40 p.m., two herders from the community reported to the Aregbe Divisional Police Headquarters that 32 of their cows were found dead in a nearby forest following a heavy rainstorm.
“The herders, who jointly own the livestock, suspected that the deaths were caused by a thunderstorm accompanied by intense lightning,” she said.
She added that the monetary value of the cattle had yet to be determined at the time of the report.
A prompt on-the-spot assessment was conducted by the Divisional Police Officer. The initial findings revealed no visible injuries on the animals.
“The cattle were found lying lifeless in various positions in the forest, and the owners stated that they do not suspect foul play. No allegations or accusations were made,” Odutola said.
In response to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Mr Lanre Ogunlowo, urged residents of the community to remain calm and treat the occurrence as a natural phenomenon.
