Sultan Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, has urged journalists across Nigeria to uphold truth and professionalism in their reporting, warning against the misuse of social media platforms to spread misinformation.
The monarch made the appeal on Sunday when he received members of the Sokoto State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), who paid him the traditional Sallah homage at his palace in Sokoto.
The Sultan emphasised the critical role of the media in shaping public opinion and maintaining national cohesion, particularly in an era where information travels rapidly through digital platforms.
“Social media is a powerful tool, but it can also be dangerous if not used responsibly. As journalists, you must not allow it to be a channel for spreading falsehood or causing disunity. Your duty is to report the truth at all times.”
He noted that the increasing reliance on instant news and user-generated content has made it more important than ever for trained journalists to stand out as credible sources of verified information.
“People look up to you for accurate and balanced reports. If you abandon that responsibility, society will suffer the consequences,” the Sultan added. “Verify your facts before publishing, and always consider the impact of your reports on peace and stability.”
The Sultan also called on media practitioners to prioritise national interest and ethical standards over sensationalism, stressing that responsible journalism remains a cornerstone of democracy and good governance.
Speaking earlier, the NUJ chairman, Mohammed Usman Binji commended the Sultan for his consistent advocacy for peace, unity and responsible leadership, particularly in Northern Nigeria. He pledged thatembets of the union will continue to uphold the ethics of the profession as well as support initiatives that promote national development.
The Sallah homage, a longstanding tradition, provided an opportunity for journalists and other stakeholders to engage with the revered monarch, exchange goodwill, and reflect on their roles in fostering a more informed and cohesive society.
