Has Nigerian government begun the process of deregistering the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)?
So it seems because the Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA), a faction of ASUU, has officially been registered as a trade union.
According to a source at the Ministry of Labour and Employment disclosed, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, will present a Certificate of Registration to the new union by end of Tuesday.
The deregistration move by the federal government is part of processes to checkmate ASUU’s presumed incessant strikes that have grounded public universities into the eighth month.
Nigerian government in September had threatened to withdraw the registration of ASUU as a trade union for allegedly failing to submit its audited reports as required by law in the past five years.
The Registrar of Trade Unions has reportedly queried the union asking why its certificate of registration should not be withdrawn for running foul of the law.
