The National Universities Commission (NUC), has approved postgraduate and 16 additional undergraduate programmes for Sokoto State University.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Sani Dangoggo said the development followed the successful verification by the commission.
Conveyed in a letter dated November 8, 2021 and signed by its Director of Academic Planning, Dr. N. B. Saliu on behalf of the commission’s Executive Secretary, Professor Abubakar Rasheed, the approval is with effect from the 2021/2022 academic session.
The postgraduate programmes include M.Sc. Sociology; Ph.D Sociology; PGD Development Studies; Master of Development Studies; Master in International Relations and Strategic Studies; M.Sc. Political Science; Ph.D Political Science; Postgraduate Diploma in Education; M.Ed. Educational Management; Ph.D Educational Management; M.Ed. Mathematics Education; M.Ed. Computer Science Education; Ph.D Mathematics Education; M.Ed. Physics Education; and Ph.D Physics Education.
Others are M. Ed. Biology Education; Ph.D Biology Education; M.Ed. Chemistry Education; Ph.D Chemistry Education; M.Ed. Guidance and Counselling; Ph.D Guidance and Counselling; M. A Islamic Studies; Ph.D Islamic Studies; M.A Arabic; Ph.D Arabic; M.A History; Ph.D History; M.A Hausa Studies; and Ph.D Hausa Studies.
The rest are M.Sc. Mathematics; Ph.D Mathematics; M.Sc. Chemistry; Ph.D Chemistry; Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science; M.Sc. Computer Science; Postgraduate Diploma in Microbiology; M.Sc. Microbiology; Postgraduate Diploma in Biochemistry; and M.Sc. Biochemistry.
The 16 additional undergraduate programmes approved for the university are B.Sc. Plant Biology; B.Sc. Industrial Mathematics; B.Sc Information Technology; B.Sc. Statistics; B.Sc. Industrial Chemistry; B.Sc. Biotechnology; BA. (Ed) English Education; BA (Ed) History Education; B. Ed. Integrated Science; and B. Ed. Social Studies.
Others are B.A. (Ed.) Arabic Education; B. A. (Ed.) Islamic Studies Education; B. A. (Ed.) Hausa Studies; B.Sc. (Ed.) Geography Education; B.Sc. (Ed.) Political Science; and B.Sc. (Ed.) Education Economics.
In his reaction, Prof. Dangoggo who said the outcome of the verification was not a surprise, assured that the efforts would continue to be geared towards making the university an enviable institution.
According to him, the university which was established in the year 2009 and commenced academic activities in 2013, currently offers 23 undergraduate programmes with full accreditation.
The Vice-Chancellor thanked the Commission for its continued efforts towards maintaining the standard of university education in the country.
Prof. Dangoggo similarly expressed the institution’s warm appreciation to the Visitor to the University, Governor Aminu Tambuwal, for his commitment towards uplifting the standard of the university, in particular, and the education sector of the state as a whole.
He also extended his appreciation to Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar; and the Chancellor of the University, who is the Emir of Dutse, Nuhu Sanusi for their respective support to the growth and development of the University.
Prof. Dangoggo also commended the good working relationship between the management, State Ministry for Higher Education and members of the Governing Council.
He specifically applauded the commitment of the Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies, Prof. Aminu Mika’ilu; Deans of the Faculty and the entire members of staff, towards the success of the exercise.
