The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has confirmed the tragic loss of five personnel in a fatal road traffic accident on Tuesday near Hawan Kibo, along the Jos-Akwanga Expressway.
The personnel were en route to a sporting event in Abuja when their vehicle collided with an oncoming truck.
This incident was disclosed in a statement by the Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF, Air Commodore Olusola Akinboyewa, on Tuesday in Abuja.
Akinboyewa expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating that the NAF has activated statutory administrative protocols to provide comfort and support to the bereaved families.
He further appealed to the public to respect the privacy of the victims’ families during this difficult period and urged against the spread of unverified information regarding the accident.
“We urge the public to show restraint and compassion in this time of grief by respecting the privacy of the families involved and refraining from sharing unverified details about the incident,” Akinboyewa stated.
The NAF also expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, praying for the repose of the souls of the fallen personnel. “May their souls rest in perfect peace. Further updates will be communicated in due course,” the statement added.
The accident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by road travel in Nigeria, particularly along major highways like the Jos-Akwanga Expressway, which has seen several fatal accidents in the past. Authorities are expected to continue investigations into the cause of the collision as they work to prevent future occurrences.
