ASHENEWS reports that several people have been injured and houses, vehicles, and properties worth millions of naira destroyed when residents of Tungan Kade community in Magama local government area of Niger state, protested over the installation of a ward head.
This online platform gathered that several people from the community, including policemen sustained various degrees of injuries during the protest but there was no recorded death.
According to sources, the problem began when the Emir of Kontagora, Muhammad Barau Muazu created a new district and appointed a Village Head. The new district is said to consist of about eight Kambari communities.
A source told ASHENEWS that the people were against the new village head because they consider him a settler and not an indigent.
Meanwhile, the Niger State House of Assembly has set up a five-man ad-hoc committee to investigate the circumstances leading to the protest and analyze the extent of damages caused as a result of the protest.
In a motion by the member representing Magama constituency, Abdulazeez Nasko, said some injured people were still recuperating in the hospital while some people have been apprehended in respect to the protest.
Nasko noted that if nothing was done as a matter of urgency, there could be another protest which may lead to deaths of residents.
Also, the Salk Elites Forum (SEF) has appealed to the state Governor, Umar Bago to call the Emir of Kontagora to order, following the alleged controversial appointments that resulted in the crisis.
The group called on the Governor to cancel all new districts and controversial appointments made by the Emir to restore peace in the local government and to save the Kambari tradition, norms, and values.
The spokesperson of the group, Mr. Bala Salka called on the Emir to respect the traditions of different ethnic groups under his domain and consult them before taking any decision that affects them.
