Borno state governor, Babagana Umara Zulum has identified corruption, lack of funding and good leadership as major problems of local government system in Nigeria.
The governor made the assertion while receiving participants of 44th course group 7 of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Study, Kuru Jos.
The group was led by the Director General, Prof Ayo Omotayo on a courtesy visit to the Governor in Maiduguri.
According to him, other challenges include lack of qualified teachers in schools and most of local government staff are redundant.
He suggested that the situation be addressed and lamented the lack of social amenities in local government areas.
Zulum commended this year’s study theme, “Local governance in Nigeria, challenges, options and opportunities”, describing it as timely.
He said that Borno state in conjunction with federal government is doing everything possible to bring back the lost glory of the state.
The director general said the institution decided to choose Borno, which has international border with three countries and to see how the state is recovering.
He pointed out that it is not easy to restore peace to war affected areas but that Zulum had done so in a very short period of time.
