Operatives of the Niger state command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, mid last week, confiscated 125 bags of substance suspected to be cannabis.
A source exclusively told ASHENEWS on Saturday that the operatives confiscated the substance at Mailefe, a village about 10km away from Kontagora.
According to the source, a brother of one of the village heads in Kontagora Emirate of the state, is mentioned to be part of the illegal business of the substance.
He further disclosed that the Coalition of Major Associations of Kontagora, declared its readiness to assist operatives of the agency in the discharge of their duties.
It also said it would ensure that investigation into the 125 bags of the substance was carried out successfully with a view to unveiling those behind the illicit business.
“We must rid our society of this criminality. We do not know for how long this has been going on in this Emirate. Whoever is or are behind this must be arrested and dealt with in accordance with our laws.
“We should not allow this to continue in our Emirate unchecked. Therefore, we will cooperate with NDLEA to bring this to the barest minimum,” a member of the association told ASHENEWS.
It was also gathered that Kontagora council chairman, Shehu Sarkin Pawa pledged to provide vehicles to convey the substance to the office of the Agency.
Another source told ASHENEWS that a brother to one of the Village Heads in the Emirate, was allegedly named as a suspect.
ASHENEWS’ calls and text messages to Sarkin Pawa were not responded to.
When ASHENEWS contacted the state commander of the agency, Mr Haruna Kwetishe through phone, he said he was not authorised to speak to the press.
However, the agency’s spokesperson, Mr Femi Babafemi simply confirmed the development saying, “Yes; it’s true.”
