ASHENEWS reports that the Niger state governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago has demanded compensation for ceding part of its land for the creation of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Bago stated this when he received officials from the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons led by its commissioner, Tijjani Aliyu Ahmed at the Government House on Monday.
He said that the state government was demanding N1 trillion from the federal government for carbon exchange being the warehouse of four hydropower plants in the country.
According to him, about 75 percent of the FCT was also created from land belonging to Niger state without due compensation paid for it.
The governor noted that the state government will no longer condone the exploitation of its resources by the country without due compensation to the people.
He maintained that the state government will henceforth ensure that all parties who have been benefiting from the abundant resources in the state pay their dues.
He said that the state government may be forced to shut down the hydropower dams in the state if the federal government refuses to yield to its demands.
“We are serious about this. It’s not a threat but a statement.
“We will take the federal government to Supreme Court unless of course the 13 percent derivation for our land, water, air, is given to us,” he said.
