The Akwa Ibom State branch of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested 312 people and seized over 803 kilograms of hard drugs between June 2024 and May 2025.
The commander of the agency in the state, Mrs. Obot Bassey, shared this information during a press event in Uyo, the state capital.
The event was held to mark the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse with the theme: “The Evidence Is Clear: Invest In Prevention, #Break the Circle.”
Bassey said that out of the 312 people arrested, 261 were men and 51 were women. She also said that 38 drug offenders were taken to court and found guilty.
She added that the agency helped 43 men who were addicted to drugs by giving them treatment and support. They also visited 91 places across the state to teach people about the dangers of drug abuse.
“From June 2024 to May 2025, we arrested 312 suspects, including 261 men and 51 women, and took 803.672 kilograms of drugs off the streets,” she said. “We got 38 people convicted in court, held drug prevention education in 91 places, helped 43 men recover from drug use, and gave counseling to 179 people.
“The commander said the theme of the event was focused on stopping drug problems before they start, using facts, research, and data—not guesses.
She explained that drug abuse is not just a crime but also a health problem, and everyone has a role to play in preventing it.
Bassey urged parents, teachers, religious leaders, and community members to work together to build safe and healthy environments that keep young people away from drugs.
She said the agency is not only enforcing drug laws but also protecting the future of Nigerian children.
Bassey reminded young people that drug use harms their health and reduces their chances of living well in society.
She asked the government, kind-hearted people, individuals, and organizations to put more money into drug prevention programs.
The commander thanked the state government for their help but also asked for more support, especially vehicles to help them reach all 31 local government areas.
She said this year’s theme encourages continued support for drug prevention efforts.
Bassey also thanked other security agencies in the state for working together to help fight drug abuse.
