The National Hospital, Abuja, has signed a two-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center at Virginia Commonwealth University, U.S., aimed at strengthening cancer research and enhancing clinical trials in Nigeria.
The agreement was inked on Tuesday in Abuja by Prof. Muhammad Mahmud, Chief Medical Director of National Hospital, and Dr. Robert Winn, Director of Massey Cancer Center.
Dr. Winn said the partnership aspires to establish a global model for fair and effective cancer research collaboration. He cited a 36% decline in U.S. cancer deaths over the past three decades—largely due to clinical trial advancements—as a benchmark Nigeria can strive toward.
“If we do this right, more Nigerians will live without cancer, and we may set an example for reducing cancer mortality across Africa,” Winn said.
Three Pillars of the Collaboration
- Implementation of Clinical Trials – Developing protocols and infrastructure to conduct trials locally.
- Education & Training – Preparing a new generation of Nigerian cancer researchers and clinicians.
- Translational Research – Fueling discoveries that directly improve patient care.
While the initial agreement spans two years, both institutions plan to review and renew the MoU biennially, ensuring sustained impact. Dr. Winn also expressed interest in extending the partnership to other Nigerian cancer institutions such as the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT).
Prof. Mahmud described the MoU as a pivotal step in the hospital’s ambition to lead in oncology across the region.
“This MoU forms part of our strategy to elevate high-potential institutions. The National Hospital is already recognised as a West African oncology hub,” he said.
He added that the collaboration will hasten progress in both clinical care and cancer research, benefiting patients across Nigeria and neighbouring countries.
“Our patients come from across the region. With this partnership, we are positioned to break new ground in cancer care and clinical research,” Mahmud emphasised.
