Global mpox cases fall, but sharp rises in Ghana, Philippines and China raise fresh concerns over localized outbreaks and vaccine needs.
In Ghana, confirmed cases of Mpox nearly doubled within a week, rising from 167 to 313. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) described the situation as “exponential.” Ghana and Guinea have requested vaccine support to contain the outbreak.
The Western Pacific region also recorded sharp increases. In the Philippines, cases jumped from zero in June to 126 in July, while China reported an increase from 108 to 152 within the same period.
By contrast, overall global trends show a decline. Between June and July, Africa reported a 28 percent drop in cases, while both the Americas and Europe recorded decreases of 31 percent. The Eastern Mediterranean Region reported no cases in July.
Despite this progress, Africa still accounts for the highest burden, with 86 percent of cases concentrated in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Sierra Leone, Burundi, Guinea and Liberia. While there was a slight 7 percent rise last week, cases across the continent have fallen by 76 percent since the epidemic’s peak.
Health experts warn that the fresh outbreaks highlight the risk of localized flare-ups, underscoring the need for targeted vaccination, stronger surveillance and sustained public health measures.
