Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama has confirmed that the United States has deported a group of West African nationals, including Nigerians and Gambians, to Ghana under a new arrangement with Accra.
According to him, his country has started receiving deportees from the US who are originally from other West African nations.
The first batch of 14 people — including Nigerians, a Gambian, and others — arrived in Accra, where authorities are facilitating their onward journey to their home countries.

Mahama said Ghana accepted the request because West Africans enjoy visa-free travel within the region, making it easier to process and return deportees.
While Ghana has agreed to the deal, Nigeria has rejected similar requests, citing security concerns and economic pressures.
