A youth group, Assembly of Lagos Youths, has condemned the lawsuit filed by former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, challenging his impeachment, describing it as a “bad omen” for the state’s political stability.
In a statement signed by its representative, Lasisi Robert, the group urged Obasa to withdraw the suit in the interest of peace, stating that his legal action could deepen divisions within the Assembly.
“Our attention has been drawn to the lawsuit filed by Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, challenging his impeachment as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly on January 13, 2025. The suit alleges that due process was not followed and that the removal was unconstitutional and unfair,” the statement read.
The group emphasized that Obasa’s removal was overwhelmingly supported by 32 out of the 39 lawmakers, a clear indication that he had lost the confidence of the House. It further pointed out that staff members of the Assembly have publicly affirmed their support for the new Speaker, Hon. Meranda.
“The office of Speaker is not a lifelong position. Hon. Obasa served in this capacity for a decade, a significant period of leadership. Seeking to reclaim the seat through legal means, despite clear opposition from the Assembly, raises concerns about his motivations and long-term intentions for the state,” the statement added.
The group also recalled that elders in the state had advised Obasa to step aside during his bid for a third term as Speaker due to ongoing investigations against him, but he allegedly ignored their counsel. They warned that his lawsuit could further expose deeper political rifts within the ruling party.
“For democracy to flourish in Lagos State, it is imperative that Hon. Obasa prioritizes peace and stability over personal interests. The end of a political tenure does not mark the end of one’s contributions to society. In this spirit, we strongly advise him to reconsider his position and withdraw the lawsuit,” the group stated.
Obasa, who served as Speaker for nearly ten years, was impeached in what political analysts describe as an internal power shift within the Lagos political structure. His removal and subsequent legal challenge have sparked debates over political accountability and leadership succession in the state.
