In Sokoto State, a conscientious effort is underway to manage expired drugs effectively, ensuring both public safety and environmental sustainability. Instead of haphazard disposal, pharmacies and hospitals adhere to a structured protocol under the vigilant oversight of the NAFDAC agency.
A survey by ASHENEWS showed that some of the pharmacies are trying to ensure safe communities by effectively disposing of expired drugs, preventing potential harm to citizens and the environment.
Mr Rolland Izuchuwu, the owner of a pharmacy on Offa Road, said that his pharmacy only purchases the necessary medications for the patients while expired medications are surrendered to NAFDAC during their scheduled visits twice weekly to prevent potential misuse.

At Model Hospital located at Offa road eastern bypass, Dr Amos Stanley prefers to bury the expired drugs instead of burning them stating that this is a meticulous approach to disposal as he added that his procurement strategy focuses on trusted pharmacies, minimizing waste and maintaining quality.
Mr Igson Matthew of Igson Pharmacy along the Offa road eastern bypass explained pharmacists are prohibited from burning expired drugs which has made them collaborate with NAFDAC for collection of the expired drugs during their weekly visits.
Kingsley Pharmacy owner, Mr Kingsley Chidezor, stresses proactive communication with suppliers to prevent drug expiration. He acknowledges that retailers are responsible for the loss of expired drugs if arrangements are not made beforehand just as he emphasized the need for careful inventory management.
A visit to the General Hospital Illela showed that the hospital also practices safe disposal of expired drugs even though staff in the hospital said they rarely get expired drugs. Dr. Jonathan Musa who spoke to ASHENEWS on the phone said the hospital consistently returned any expired drugs along with the receipt to exchange them for new ones.
This proactive approach guarantees fresh medication, he said, goes a long way in maintaining the integrity of healthcare services.
