The United Nasarawa State Women for Sustainable Development has called on the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman Ibrahim, to intensify efforts to promote women’s empowerment across Nasarawa State.
The group made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the Minister’s office on Friday, where it also presented her with its “Trailblazers Award of Excellence” in recognition of her leadership and advocacy.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, the group’s leader, Asmau Oyanki, said the Minister was the first recipient of the award, describing her as a role model for women across the country.
She urged the Minister to deploy the full weight of her office to advance women’s empowerment beyond political and religious boundaries, stressing the need for inclusive policies that would uplift women at all levels.
Oyanki also conveyed the goodwill of Prof. Sa’a Hassan Liman and wife of the former governor of Nasarawa State, Khadija Abdullahi Adamu, who, she said, were unable to attend the visit due to unavoidable circumstances.
In her remarks, Ambassador Zainab advised the Minister to use her influence to facilitate the reinstatement of afternoon schools, noting that such a policy would expand access to education for the girl child and reduce barriers to learning.
Responding, the Minister thanked the delegation for the honour and acknowledged the persistent gaps in women’s inclusion and opportunity. She noted that despite their integrity and contributions across various sectors, many women were still denied access to leadership and decision-making positions.
Reaffirming her personal faith and conviction, the Minister said her entry into politics was driven by a sense of purpose and service.
She underscored the critical role of parenting in shaping the next generation, observing that youths make up about 50 per cent of Nigeria’s population. Quoting the adage “charity begins at home,” she reflected on her upbringing, which she said differed significantly from the realities facing many children today.
The Minister urged women to actively contest for elective positions in 2027, describing participation itself as a “win-win” regardless of the outcome.
She pledged continued support for the association and reiterated her commitment to the fight against gender-based violence in Nigeria.
She also emphasized the need for women to maintain a healthy work-life balance and sustain strong social networks.
The meeting ended with formal introductions by members of the delegation.
