The Bassa ethnic group in Bassa local government area of Kogi state, have begun mobilizing their people, to reconstruct a dilapidated ancient bridge.
The bridge links Aguma, headquarters of the local government with Sheria, a commercial city, ASHENEWSONLINE gathers, has been abandoned by all successful governments for decades.
Following growing worries by the communities and alleged government’s lack of concern, the Bassa ethnic groups in the area are mobilizing to raise N15 million for the construction of the wooden bridge, into which river motor vehicles have been falling.
The lead mobiliser, Barrister Zagana Gbaje, called on Bassa sons and daughters, both at home and in Diaspora to contribute their quota in ensuring the actualization of the project.
“We will not wait for the government because we don’t know when it will come in. This bridge has remained dilapidated and deaths trap for decades.
“The commercial activities of this area are gradually deteriorating due to lack of accessible road. If the government decides to come in, good and fine, but the Bassa nation is ready and well prepared to salvage the situation,” he said.
He also appealed to other ethnic groups residing in the area as well as well-meaning Nigerians, to contribute towards the execution of the project.
According to Gbaje, all communities around the area are into agriculture production, which will help to enhance food security in the country.
He equally called on Kogi and Federal governments to come to their aide, stressing that the bridge is at the verge of total collapse if quick action was not taken.
