The President of the Association of Nigerian Students in Europe, Bashiru Saidu Muhammad has commended Zamfara state governor, Bello Muhammad for taking prompt action to resolve the issue of non-payment of tuition fees of the state students studying in Cyprus International University.
Some media reports have narrated how school authorities in Cyprus have thrown out Zamfara state government sponsored students from their campuses for alleged failure to pay their tuition fees.
“We have been in so much debt to the extent that the school says they can no longer take it. They have sent us out of the dormitory. For seven days now, we have been living out of our dormitories. Some of us have been living in the mosque while others are nowhere to be found,” one of the students said in recorded video which has gone viral on social media.
Muhammad, in an exclusive telephone interview with ASHENEWS on Friday said he contacted the state governor and discussed the issue for over an hour.
“Yes, I am in touch with Zamfara state governor and I am glad to tell you that we had fruitful discussion over the situation of the state students in Cyprus. The governor was able to identify from where the problem arose and I was able to advise him on how quickly we could solve the problem.
“I assure you that as we speak, the issues are being taken head-on by the governor and they will be solved in no time,” he told ASHENEWS.
According to Muhammad, he also contacted the head of Zamfara students in Cyprus International University, Muhammad Isah who confirmed the students’ plight and calls received by some politicians who are offering to assist the students.
“The head of the students in the university expressed his worry how the matter was being politicized. Isah told me that it seemed their problem was being politicized but I assured him that I was on top of the matter with governor Bello Muhammad,” he further told ASHENEWS.
He further revealed that the governor would send a delegation to Cyprus with a view to solving the issue once and for all.
