Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has reportedly suffered a stroke and been flown abroad for urgent medical care.
Government sources described his condition as “very serious,” adding that he is receiving intensive treatment overseas. The sources linked his illness to exhaustion and stress from his demanding work schedule.
President Bola Tinubu has reportedly begun discreet consultations to identify a possible replacement, given Edun’s key role in economic management.
Confirming his indisposition, the Presidency announced on Sunday that Central Bank Governor Olayemi Cardoso will now lead Nigeria’s delegation to the World Bank and IMF Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C.
Edun, a long-time associate of President Tinubu, was appointed Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy in August 2023. His absence could affect ongoing fiscal and economic reforms.
