The Egbesu Ijaws of Gbaramatu have expressed strong opposition to the recent suspension of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy. In a statement, the group described the decision as unconstitutional and called on President Bola Tinubu to reconsider the action.
According to the Ijaw leaders, the suspension undermines democratic principles and could lead to further political instability in the state. They urged the Federal Government to prioritize dialogue and peaceful resolution rather than actions that could escalate tensions.
“We believe in the rule of law and the protection of constitutional governance,” the statement read. “The people of Rivers State deserve to be governed by their duly elected leaders, and any attempt to disrupt this mandate will be resisted through lawful and peaceful means.”
The group also expressed concerns about the deployment of military personnel in Rivers State, stating that it could heighten anxiety and worsen the situation. They appealed to the federal authorities to exercise restraint and encourage constructive dialogue.
Furthermore, the Egbesu Ijaws underscored the strategic importance of the Niger Delta to Nigeria’s economy, calling for inclusive political processes that reflect the aspirations of all stakeholders.
They concluded by urging the international community to monitor the situation and support efforts to ensure a peaceful resolution.
