Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto has called on Canadian government to support the National Assembly, NASS, to expedite action and pass the Electoral Act that has been lying before it.
The governor made the call when he received the Acting Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Nicolas Simard at the government House in Sokoto on Wednesday.
According to Tambuwal, facilitating the passage of the bill would guarantee stable democracy, strengthen democracy and guarantee the delivery of good governance.
“Nigerians are interested in deepening the nation’s democracy and that could happen where there was free and fair election.
“Free and fair elections can be guaranteed by workable laws guiding the conduct and process of electioneering system. If the present National Assembly passed the Electoral Act, it will surely smoothen the system,” the governor said.
He stressed that going by NASS’ slow pace on the passage of the amended laws, more support and encouragements were needed.
Speaking earlier, Simard said they were in Sokoto to partner with the state government in the areas of education, health and others towards the improvement of the nation’s economy and fight poverty.
”Issues of girl child education, maternal health, Gender Based Violence, Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) and the rising insecurity in the North-West regions are also of concern to the Canadian government” he said
