The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has commended President Bola Tinubu for directing Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) to ensure the immediate release of minors detained during the #EndBadGovernance protests across Nigeria.
It said the directive, announced by Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris, demonstrates the President’s commitment to reuniting these minors with their families.
In a statement signed by CISLAC Executive Director, Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, the organization praised the President’s decision and urged him to expand the directive to include other detained protesters, advocating for greater unity and justice. CISLAC also highlighted the need for comprehensive reforms in Nigeria’s criminal justice system, specifically in judicial and police operations.
CISLAC called for robust judicial reform to tackle corruption and ensure that only judges of integrity serve, which it believes would enhance the rule of law and encourage investor confidence. Additionally, CISLAC emphasized the need for police reforms, particularly in recruitment, service conduct, and welfare. “Building a merit-based, transparent police force that upholds public trust is essential for national security,” Rafsanjani stated, urging the government to address issues of police misconduct and improve officer welfare and benefits.
Furthermore, CISLAC applauded the President’s directive for the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to facilitate the rehabilitation and safe return of the minors to their families, viewing it as a compassionate response to the humanitarian issues faced by these children.
The organization also called for an empowered National Orientation Agency (NOA) to educate Nigerians on civic responsibilities and active citizenship. CISLAC expressed optimism over President Tinubu’s earlier pledge to engage in dialogue with Nigerian youth, addressing their concerns around poverty, corruption, and limited opportunities. “The President must work closely with impartial advisors to ensure that this dialogue addresses the root causes of youth discontent,” CISLAC stated.
CISLAC reaffirmed its support for government efforts toward reform and improved governance, urging continued responsiveness to citizens’ demands for justice and accountability.
