The Inter Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) in Sokoto state has warned political parties to be guided by the provisions of the Electoral Act that kick against violent electioneering.
The warning was dished out at a meeting it convened led by the Sokoto State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Usaini Gumel held at the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday.
The meeting which was attended by critical stakeholders, including party chairmen and secretaries, reviewed the ongoing campaigns activities characterized by intruders who wield weapons, dish vulgar statements on political opponents, and exhibit hard drugs.
The ICCES sensitised the leaders of the political parties, addressed the emerging concerns, and also reminded them on their roles as political parties to checkmate mischievous followers as well as guard against hate speech.
ICCES warned that the Police and INEC Legal teams would deal ruthlessly with violators of the Electoral Act.
The leaders of the political parties agreed to assign committees charges with screening their supporters and ensuring that no body carried any weapon during campaigns.
Representatives of the political parties also signed Oath of Commitment.
The decision for the meeting was informed by the observed disturbing threats of electioneering.
