Additionally, Niger State ranked sixth in millet, seventh in benniseed, and tenth in tomato production, showcasing a diverse and resilient agricultural economy.
This impressive performance builds on Niger State’s longstanding tradition as a major food producer in Nigeria. Local government initiatives and multi-million dollar projects targeted at enhancing agricultural productivity have played a significant role. One notable effort is the ambitious $1.2 billion rice sector development program, which focuses on increasing seed quality and expanding cultivated land to boost production further.
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago revealed that the agriculture sector contributed over N600 billion to the state’s economy in 2024, reflecting agriculture’s central place in both economic growth and food security ambitions in Niger State.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with food inflation and supply challenges, Niger State’s agricultural output shines as a beacon of progress. Its success in staples like rice and yam not only ensures food supply resilience but also drives economic opportunities for farmers and agribusinesses across the region.
In summary, Niger State’s top rankings in the 2024 Statisense survey confirm its status as one of Nigeria’s leading agricultural hubs—a vital engine powering the country’s food security and rural development goals.
