Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has launched a tree planting campaign to fight the effects of climate change. He also promised to build alternative roads and a flyover/underpass to ease the heavy traffic on the Karu–Abuja road.
Speaking at the event on Wednesday in Karu Local Government Area, the governor said the campaign was aimed at creating greener spaces, reducing the impact of climate change, and improving the well-being of the people.
He explained that the effort was in line with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to protecting the environment and supporting community development.
“The campaign will help beautify our state, reduce erosion, and provide a healthier environment for our people,” Governor Sule said.
The governor also revealed that his government had distributed enough waste bins to all 13 Local Government Areas to encourage proper waste disposal.
He added that if waste is properly managed through climate-smart methods, it can be turned into useful products such as fertilizer for farming and even power generation, boosting the economy.
On traffic congestion in Karu, Sule said the state had requested support from the Federal Government to build alternative routes in Mararaba, Gitata, and Gurku, and also to construct a flyover/underpass to reduce the frequent gridlock in the area.
Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Margaret Elayo, appealed to residents to support government efforts by protecting the environment and keeping it clean to prevent diseases and disasters.
She blamed many environmental challenges on poor waste management, warning that this could lead to climate change and desertification.
Elayo urged residents to make use of the bins provided in different locations, noting that the Nasarawa State Waste Management Agency (NASWAMSA) was ready to pick them up.
Meanwhile, the Esu Karu, Luka Panya-Baba, and the Chairman of Karu LGA, Abubakar Madaki, lamented that road blockages in Old Karu and Rugan Madaki were making life difficult for motorists and worsening the traffic situation.
