President Bola Tinubu has issued a directive for a temporary ban on the export of raw Shea Nuts, effective immediately. This decision aims to regulate the current export activities and possibly enhance local processing and value addition within the country.
The announcement was made by Mr. Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President, in a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja. The statement highlights the government’s commitment to ensuring that the directive is fully implemented.
At present, Vice-President Kashim Shettima is leading a high-level meeting with key stakeholders to discuss and oversee the execution of the Presidential order. This meeting focuses on ensuring that all parties involved in the Shea nut export value chain understand and comply with the ban, as well as exploring strategies to maximize the economic benefits from Shea nuts domestically.
The temporary ban is seen as part of broader efforts to boost local industries, safeguard critical agricultural resources, and promote economic growth by encouraging the processing of raw materials before export. The government is expected to provide further guidelines and a timeline for the duration of this ban in due course.
