The Jigawa State Government has earmarked N17 billion for livestock development programmes in the 2026 budget.
Prof. Abdulraman Salim, Commissioner for Livestock Development, disclosed this on Monday during a budget defense before the State House of Assembly Committee on Agriculture.
He said the funds would fast-track the development of ranches equipped with pasture, water points, veterinary clinics, and other essential amenities. The ranches are designed to provide secure settlements for pastoralists and help reduce conflicts between herders and farmers.
“At the ranches, pastoralists will have access to high-quality feed for their livestock, good schools for their children, health facilities, veterinary clinics, markets, and reliable power and water supply,” Salim said.
The commissioner added that the ministry plans to establish veterinary clinics across all 27 local government areas to enhance animal health services and safeguard public health.
“Another key initiative is to improve existing structures and service quality, establish seven zonal veterinary clinics, and set up a modern veterinary referral centre. The budget also prioritizes training and retraining of veterinary personnel at all levels to ensure competent service delivery,” he explained.
Salim further announced plans to revitalize livestock breeding centres in Gumel, Birniwa, and Kaugama, alongside meat processing plants.
He said about N335 million had been set aside for meat processing facilities, slaughter slabs, and abattoirs under the House of Assembly constituency projects.
The commissioner added that the state would collaborate with national organizations to establish modern abattoirs, aiming to boost beef and milk exports.
