The wife of Enugu State Governor, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah has distributed bags of fertilizer to registered farmers across the 17 local government areas of the state to boost agricultural productivity and ensure food security.
Speaking during the distribution exercise on Wednesday in Enugu, Mrs. Mbah said the gesture was part of her office’s empowerment initiative aimed at supporting farmers with essential inputs to enhance crop yields and improve livelihoods.
She explained that the initiative was a collaborative effort between her office and the Enugu State Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation.
According to her, fertilizer plays a crucial role in improving soil fertility, boosting crop yields, and ensuring that farmers achieve healthier and more abundant harvests.
“By empowering you with these fertilizers, we are strengthening the entire agricultural sector in our state. Increased crop output means more food on our tables, higher incomes for our families, and a stronger economy for Enugu,” she said.
Mrs. Mbah added that the initiative underscored the state’s commitment to food security, noting that when farmers thrive, the entire state benefits.
“With enhanced production, we reduce the need for food imports, stabilize prices, and ensure that no family goes hungry,” she said.
She commended the Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Patrick Ubru, for his dedication and consistent efforts toward advancing agricultural development in the state.
According to her, visionary leadership has been instrumental in formulating policies and programmes that empower farmers and drive food production.
Mrs. Mbah also appreciated the contributions of various stakeholders, development partners, and agricultural experts who supported the initiative.
“Their support and expertise strengthen the foundation on which we build our agricultural programmes, ensuring that our farmers receive inputs, training, and technical assistance to maximize productivity,” she said.
She advised beneficiaries to use the fertilizers strictly for farming purposes and apply them responsibly.
“It is not for storage or resale but for application on your farmland. I urge you to apply these fertilizers judiciously, with care and knowledge, to achieve the best possible results. Responsible use will maximize your yields and transform your livelihood,” she stated.
In his remarks, Mr. Patrick Ubru, represented by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture, Mr. Mike Ogbuewu, said the distribution aligned with Governor Peter Mbah’s vision of achieving food sufficiency in Enugu State.
He stressed the need to make agriculture more attractive and profitable for residents.
“We want our people to see agriculture as a viable business that can grow Enugu’s economy,” Ubru said.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Anastasia Ani, thanked the governor’s wife for the support and pledged to use the fertilizer effectively to increase her yield.
