The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Lagos State chapter, has dismissed claims of egg scarcity in the state, insisting that eggs are abundant and selling at relatively low prices.
The chapter’s Chairman, Mr Mojeed Iyiola, stated this in an interview with reporters on Tuesday in Lagos.
Iyiola reiterated that there was a surplus of eggs in the state, contrary to reports of scarcity in some areas.
“I want to say clearly that eggs are available in Lagos. There is no scarcity of eggs in the state.
“Wherever people are experiencing scarcity, it is not a natural shortage. It may be that some traders lack the funds to purchase the product, but eggs are available,” he said.
He explained that PAN recently displayed and sold crates of eggs across its eight zones in Lagos from Dec. 31, 2025, into the New Year at very low prices to prevent an egg glut.
“We sold crates between N4,800 and N5,000, compared with the usual farm-gate price of N4,900 to N5,200 per crate,” he said.
Iyiola added that egg and chicken prices could drop further during the Easter period if the Lagos State Government extends its intervention in the poultry sector.
According to him, some traders who claim scarcity may be unable to access supplies because they owe their suppliers, who may have declined to release new stock.
“For now, there is no egg scarcity. Prices have been reasonable because of the intervention we received from the Lagos State Government, which was aimed at forcing prices down.
“Although the intervention has been suspended for now, the government is considering further support to reduce the prices of poultry products during Easter.
“If this is done, we will have subsidized prices for both eggs and chicken during the Easter celebrations,” Iyiola said.
