The Northern Consumers Protection Association (NCPA) and the Grassroots Mobilisation Initiative praised President Bola Tinubu for asking a government committee to quickly take steps to lower food prices in Nigeria.
The groups promised to support the government and said they hope quick action will help Nigerians get affordable food.
In a joint statement signed by NCPA leader Ahmed Abubakar and Grassroots Mobilisation Initiative coordinator Samaila Musa, the groups said this move is timely and needed to fight the rising cost of living in Nigeria.
They praised Tinubu’s decision as a sign that the government wants to reduce the hardships Nigerians face. They also liked the focus on making sure farm products can move safely along transport routes, as stressed by the Minister of State for Agriculture, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi.
The statement said, “As groups representing consumers in northern Nigeria and local communities, we know how high food prices make life hard for families, especially those with less money.
“The rising cost of living is a big problem. It affects not just what people can buy, but also their quality of life. President Tinubu’s order to lower food prices is a good step that shows he wants to help Nigerians.
“Making sure farm goods move safely on roads, as Senator Abdullahi said, is very important. Fixing problems with transport will help lower food prices by making the supply chain smoother.
“This committee must work quickly and carefully to make it easier to move food from farms to markets.
“We ask the Federal Executive Council committee to follow the President’s orders without delay. They should work closely with everyone involved in farming, selling, and transporting food to make sure the plan works well.
“Working together with all these groups is key to solving the problems that have made it hard to move food across the country.”
The groups asked the committee to act fast, work with all parts of the food system, and find new ways to improve food delivery. This could include building better roads, using technology to manage supply chains, and creating partnerships to help move farm goods smoothly.
“We can solve the many problems that cause high food prices and make sure all Nigerians can afford food.
“These two groups are ready to help, support consumers, and work with the government to build a fair and lasting food system.
“We believe that with the right actions, food can become easier and cheaper for everyone, improving life for many communities.
“To finish, we thank President Bola Tinubu for taking this important step and urge the committee to act fast and well. Together, we can make a future where every Nigerian has the right to affordable food without too much cost.”
